Recently I got the special privilege of interviewing Sarah, from HER Tribal. Her and her daughter have both been a part of our Girl Truth community from the very beginning. She is also a dear friend to me.

Focusing on ourselves as mothers may seem selfish, but really it’s the best thing we can do spiritually for our children. Making that time to read our word, having devotional time with the Lord, praying, etc is how we set ourselves up for success.  Every battle that we face as the people of God, as women of God, as parents or whatever our title may be, starts in the spirit. Everything we face and everything that we are asking God for, first takes place in the spirit. Before it even happens in the natural, it will happen in the spirit. Anything that’s manifesting itself in the natural is because of what’s going on underneath.

We see this all throughout the Bible, where things were happening underneath. The Israelites turned their face from God and experienced years of turmoil, but it first began in the spirit. It first began with the condition of their heart and relationship with our Heavenly Father.

You don’t have to be perfect. What our daughters need is to see us live out an authentic faith. Not a perfect faith because we’re not perfect. Only Jesus is perfect, but if our faith is authentic then our children will be more likely to gravitate towards what is real. What does that mean? It means we’re not saying one thing and doing another. We’re not lecturing them about one thing and then living another way. When we say we love and follow Jesus they would be able to see that in every area of our life. When we mess up…we own it. We don’t try to cover it up. We don’t try to hide it. We just own it.

Did you know since 2009, self-harm has increased 189% amongst preteen girls. While that statistic is staggering, it says nothing of the suicide rates, the depression and the anxiety rates that are skyrocketing with our teenagers. I recently seen a video of a woman who went under cover as an 11 year old girl with her media company. It only took 1 minute for predators to start messaging the woman who was portraying herself as a child. These predators commented with obscene words and pictures. It was shocking!

Have you ever wondered why it is so hard to get your teen enthusiastic about anything? Yes, I know like me you have heard those dreaded words like, "I'm bored," even though there's tons of things to do in their room. Here's the reason why. Teenagers naturally have a lower amount of dopamine in their brains. They actually have less than adults. 

So what is dopamine? Dopamine is a little neurotransmitter that is responsible for all our pleasure and our reward responses. Anytime we do something fun, novel, exciting or we eat food that's really good, dopamine is released and it says, "Oh, I want to do that again!"

Well teenagers have very little of this. They actually do not have a lot of dopamine and that is why they are constantly chasing thrill-seeking, exciting or really high highs. I talk about this subject a lot, but the more and more that I sit with moms and teenagers and hear their stories on a weekly basis I am absolutely convinced that we are living in a digital Babylon.

I am super passionate about prayer. I love to pray and intercede, especially when it comes to the next generation because I truly believe that it is one of our most valuable weapons that we can ever use. 

I had struggled with the Lord with this because I emphasize prayer a lot in our community. I talk about prayer a lot. I legit have a prayer wall with all the of the Girl Truth teenage girl's names on it. However, I have been criticized for that because some people feel like you can't just pray ALL the time.
